Safety Around Water

Skills to last a lifetime

Safety Around Water consists of eight lessons designed to teach kids water safety skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and build their skills and confidence in and around water. A typical session includes:

  • Exercises to help kids adjust to being in the water
  • Instruction in two skill sets kids can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water: Jump, Push, Turn, Grab and Swim, Float Swim
  • Safety topics like what to do if you see someone in the water who needs help
  • Fun activities that reinforce skills

Safety Around Water lessons are 30 minutes long and meet eight times per session.

Thanks to generous funding from POOLCORP, Safety Around Water is provided at no cost to participants whose household income is less than $60,000/year.

During Safety Around Water sessions, participants will demonstrate basic water competency by learning three benchmark skills:
Swim, float, swim

Sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exiting. This sequence provides strategies for pausing and breathing/resting in order to make it to safety.

Jump, push, turn, grab

Stand on the edge of the pool, jump in, submerge and push off the bottom while turning toward the wall. Grab the wall with both hands and exit. This sequence helps teach students to surface and exit in water over their heads.

Treading
